Day 4 — Real Beauty

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.”

— 1 Peter 3:3–4 (BSB)

Everywhere you look, someone is telling girls what “beautiful” means. Ads, movies, videos and magazines are full of it. You need this makeup. You need these clothes. You need this body. And many of the pictures you see have been edited to look perfect, so nobody actually looks like that in real life!

It’s no wonder so many girls feel like they’re not pretty enough.

Peter wrote about beauty two thousand years ago. Even back then, people cared a lot about fancy hairstyles, gold jewelry and expensive clothes. And Peter said, That’s not where real beauty comes from.

Now, Peter isn’t saying it’s wrong to braid your hair or wear a necklace! He’s saying those things aren’t the source of your beauty. Real beauty comes from somewhere else: “the inner disposition of your heart.”

Then Peter describes a kind of beauty that never fades: “a gentle and quiet spirit.”

What does that mean? A gentle spirit is kind and caring, not harsh or mean. A quiet spirit doesn’t mean you can never talk or laugh or be loud! Some of the most joyful girls are very lively. A quiet spirit means a heart at peace. It trusts God instead of worrying. It isn’t always fighting for attention or trying to prove itself.

Notice the word “unfading.” Outer beauty changes. Hair turns gray. Faces get wrinkles. Styles go out of date. But a heart full of God’s gentleness and peace just keeps getting more beautiful, all the way to old age.

Think about the most beautiful older woman you know, maybe a grandmother or a lady at church. What makes her beautiful? Probably her kindness, her smile, her warmth and her love for God. That’s the unfading kind.

And Peter says it’s “precious in God’s sight.” When God looks at a girl with a gentle, peaceful, trusting heart, He sees something precious.

Think about it: Who is a woman you know who is beautiful on the inside? What makes her that way?

Try this: Write a note to a woman who shows “unfading beauty,” and tell her what you admire about her.

Dear God, the world tells me a lot about what beautiful means. Help me care most about the beauty You care about. Grow a gentle and quiet spirit in me: a heart that is kind, peaceful and trusting. Thank You that this beauty is precious to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
