Day 14 — Watch and Pray
“Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
— Matthew 26:41 (BSB)
It was the night before Jesus died. He took Peter, James and John into a garden called Gethsemane, and He asked them to stay awake and pray while He went a little farther to pray alone. Jesus was in great sorrow, knowing what was about to happen.
But when Jesus came back, He found His disciples asleep.
He said to Peter, “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
Jesus knew that a very hard night was coming for His disciples. Soon soldiers would arrive to arrest Him, and the disciples would be tempted to run away and deny Him. Jesus wanted them to be ready. And the way to be ready was to watch and pray.
Then Jesus said something very honest about all of us: “The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” In other words, You want to do the right thing. Your heart is in the right place. But you’re weaker than you think.
That was true for Peter. He really did want to stay faithful to Jesus. He’d even promised he would never deny Him. But he didn’t watch and pray. He slept. And when the moment of temptation came, he wasn’t ready. He ran away, and later denied even knowing Jesus.
Here’s the lesson: don’t wait until temptation shows up to get ready for it. Watching and praying is how you prepare.
Watching means paying attention. Noticing situations where you’re likely to be tempted. Knowing your weak spots. If you know you get tempted when you’re alone on a device late at night, don’t put yourself in that situation.
Praying means asking God for strength before you need it. Asking Him to help you, protect you and give you courage. Jesus Himself taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
You want to do the right thing. That’s great! But don’t count on willpower alone. Watch and pray.
Think about it: What are some situations where you’re most likely to be tempted? How could you “watch” for them?
Try this: Each morning this week, pray, “God, lead me not into temptation, and deliver me from the evil one.”
Dear Jesus, I want to do the right thing, but I know I’m weaker than I think. Help me watch for temptation and pray for strength before I need it. Lead me not into temptation, and deliver me from the evil one. In Your name, Amen.
