Day 5 — Strength from God
“I love You, O LORD, my strength… It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear. He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.”
— Psalm 18:1, 32–33 (BSB)
David was a warrior. He fought lions and bears as a shepherd boy. He killed a giant with a sling. He led armies into battle and won victory after victory. If anybody could brag about his own strength, it was David.
But look at how he started this song: “I love You, O LORD, my strength.”
David knew where his strength really came from. Not from his muscles or his skill or his experience. From God. “It is God who arms me with strength.”
David wrote Psalm 18 after God had rescued him from all his enemies, including King Saul, who had chased him for years. Looking back, David could see that it wasn’t his own power that had kept him alive. God had been with him the whole time.
Then David uses a cool picture: “He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.” Have you ever seen a mountain goat or a deer leaping across steep rocks? They move with amazing balance and confidence in places where a person would slip and fall. David said God made him steady and sure-footed, even on dangerous ground.
This is the kind of strength God wants to give you. Not just the kind that lifts weights, but the kind that stands firm when life gets hard. The strength to do the right thing when it’s unpopular. The strength to say no to temptation. The strength to keep going when you want to quit. The strength to be kind when you want to get even.
Physical strength is good. It’s fine to work out, play hard and grow strong! But the strongest men in the Bible knew that their real strength came from God. And that kind of strength is available to every guy, whether you’re the biggest kid in class or the smallest.
Think about it: Where do you need God’s strength most right now: at school, at home, with friends, or in some struggle?
Try this: Memorize Psalm 18:32: “It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear.” Say it when you need courage today.
Dear God, You are my strength. Thank You that my strength doesn’t have to come from me. Arm me with Your strength today. Make my feet steady when life feels slippery. Help me do what’s right. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
