Day 9 — Sin at the Door
“‘Why are you angry,’ said the LORD to Cain, ‘and why has your countenance fallen? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.’”
— Genesis 4:6–7 (BSB)
Cain and Abel were the first two brothers in history, the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain was a farmer, and Abel was a shepherd.
One day, both brothers brought offerings to God. Abel brought the best of his flock. God was pleased with Abel’s offering, but not with Cain’s. The Bible suggests Cain’s heart wasn’t right, and he didn’t bring his best.
Cain was furious. His face fell. He was jealous of his brother.
And God came to Cain and talked with him. That’s amazing! God didn’t just leave Cain alone with his anger. He came to warn him.
“Why are you angry? … If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
God described sin like a wild animal, maybe a lion, crouching just outside the door, waiting to pounce. And anger was opening the door.
God gave Cain a choice. You can master this. You can rule over it. You don’t have to let it win.
Sadly, Cain didn’t listen. He let his anger and jealousy grow, and later he attacked his brother Abel and killed him. The first murder in history started with anger that wasn’t mastered.
Most guys will never do anything like what Cain did. But the pattern is still the same. Anger and jealousy start small. He got picked and I didn’t. It’s not fair. I hate him. If you let those feelings sit and grow, they can lead you to say and do things you never thought you would.
The good news is that God still says what He said to Cain: “You must master it.” With God’s help, you can. You don’t have to be controlled by your anger or jealousy.
How do you master it?
- Notice it early, before it grows.
- Talk to God about it honestly.
- Talk to someone you trust.
- Do what’s right, even when you don’t feel like it.
Think about it: Why do you think God described sin as “crouching at your door”? What doors does anger or jealousy open in your life?
Try this: If you’re jealous of or angry at someone right now, tell God about it honestly, and ask Him to help you master it before it grows.
Dear God, thank You for warning me about sin, like You warned Cain. When anger or jealousy crouches at my door, help me master it. Help me do what is right, and keep my heart from growing bitter. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
