Day 4 — Straight Paths
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (BSB)
Imagine you’re hiking in a thick forest you’ve never been to before. There are paths going in every direction. Some go uphill, some downhill, some seem to disappear into the bushes. Which one should you take?
Now imagine you have a guide with you, someone who has walked this forest a thousand times and knows every path. Would you ignore the guide and choose your own way? Of course not! You’d follow the one who knows where to go.
Life is like that forest. You’ll face lots of choices. Which friends to spend time with. What to do after school. What to study, what job to have, where to live, who to marry. And many of those choices will be confusing.
Proverbs gives us a guide for all of them.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart.” Not just a little bit. With your whole heart. Put all your weight on Him, like leaning back into a chair you know will hold you.
“Lean not on your own understanding.” Your own understanding is limited. You can’t see the future. You don’t know everything. Sometimes what seems like the best path isn’t. So don’t rely only on what you think.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him.” In every part of your life, remember God. Ask Him for help. Include Him in your decisions, big and small. Don’t just pray about the “spiritual” stuff. Pray about your friendships, your schoolwork, your hobbies and your future.
“And He will make your paths straight.” Here’s the promise! When you trust God and include Him in everything, He guides you. He’ll clear the way and lead you where you need to go.
That doesn’t mean you’ll always see the whole path ahead. Often, like a flashlight in the dark, God shows you just the next step. But you can trust that He knows where the path leads.
Think about it: Is there a decision you’re facing right now where you’ve been leaning on your own understanding instead of trusting God?
Try this: Before each decision today, pause and ask, “God, what would You want me to do?”
Dear God, I want to trust You with all my heart. Help me not to lean on my own understanding. In all my ways, I want to remember You and include You. Please make my paths straight and lead me where You want me to go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
