Day 2 — God’s Masterpiece
“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.”
— Ephesians 2:8–10 (BSB)
Have you ever made something you were really proud of? A drawing, a LEGO build, a science project or a batch of cookies? When you make something with care, it reflects you. It shows your ideas and your skill.
Paul says, “We are God’s workmanship.” The word Paul used means something carefully and skillfully made, like a work of art. You are God’s masterpiece! He designed you with care, and you show something about Him.
Notice the order of these verses.
First, verses 8 and 9 say we are saved “by grace…through faith…not by works.” You can’t earn your way to God by doing good things. Salvation is a gift you receive by trusting Jesus.
But then verse 10 says we were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” So good works matter a lot! They just come after salvation, not before. We don’t do good things to get saved. We do good things because we’ve been saved.
Think of it this way. A car isn’t made by driving. It’s built in a factory first. But once it’s built, it’s made for driving! In the same way, God makes us new in Christ as a gift, and then He sends us out to do good.
And here’s the most exciting part: God “prepared in advance” the good works He wants you to do. Before you were even born, God had already planned good things for you to do. Kind words you’ll say, people you’ll help, jobs you’ll do, prayers you’ll pray. He’s been getting them ready for you!
That means your life has meaning. Every day, there are good works waiting for you, prepared by God. Some are small, like helping a friend with homework. Some might be big, like becoming a doctor, a teacher, a missionary or a parent. But they all matter to God.
Think about it: What do you think are some of the “good works” God might have prepared for you to do?
Try this: Each morning this week, pray, “God, what good works have You prepared for me today?” Then keep your eyes open for them.
Dear God, thank You that I am Your masterpiece. Thank You that You saved me by grace, as a gift. Now help me do the good works You prepared for me. Show me what they are, and help me do them with joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
