Day 12 — Made for Rest

“Then Jesus declared, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’”

— Mark 2:27 (BSB)

After six days of creating the whole universe, what did God do on the seventh day? He rested.

God didn’t rest because He was tired. God never gets tired! He rested to show us something. Rest is part of the way God designed the world, and part of the way He designed us.

Later, God gave His people a special command: every seventh day would be a Sabbath, a day of rest. No work. Instead, they would rest, worship God and enjoy time with family.

By Jesus’ time, some religious leaders had turned the Sabbath into a long list of rules. You couldn’t carry things, walk too far or even pick a little grain to eat if you were hungry. They cared more about their rules than about people!

So Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” In other words, God gave us rest as a gift. It’s for our good. It’s not a burden or a test.

Many people today don’t rest well. They’re always busy. Schedules are packed with school, homework, sports, lessons, practices and activities. And when there’s free time, it often gets filled up with screens. Our bodies might be sitting still, but our minds never stop.

God knows we need real rest. Rest reminds us that we’re not God. The world keeps spinning even when we stop! And rest shows that we trust Him to take care of things.

Here are some ways to rest well:

  • Sleep enough. Your growing body needs lots of sleep.
  • Unplug sometimes. Take breaks from screens.
  • Worship. Spend time with God’s people at church.
  • Enjoy God’s creation. Go outside, take a walk and look at the sky.
  • Spend unhurried time with family and friends.
  • Do something that fills you up, like reading, drawing or playing.

Even Jesus took time to rest. When His disciples were busy and tired, He invited them to come away with Him to a quiet place and rest (Mark 6:31).

Rest isn’t laziness. It’s a gift from God.

Think about it: Do you get enough real rest? What keeps you from resting well?

Try this: Plan a time of real rest this week. Unplug from screens for a few hours and do something restful with your family or outside.

Dear God, thank You for the gift of rest. Help me trust You enough to stop and rest. Help me take breaks, sleep well and enjoy time with You and the people I love. Thank You that the Sabbath was made for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
