Day 28 — The Same in the Dark
“He who walks in integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.”
— Proverbs 10:9 (BSB)
What would you do if you knew for sure that no one would ever find out?
Would you take the extra cookie? Copy your friend’s homework? Say something mean about someone behind their back? Look at something you’re not supposed to? Keep the extra change the cashier accidentally gave you?
That question shows something important about who we really are. Integrity means being the same person whether anyone is watching or not. The word comes from the same root as integer, which means a whole number. A person with integrity is whole. They’re not one person at church and a different person at school. They’re not one person when grown-ups are around and another when they’re gone.
Daniel was a man of integrity. He worked for the king of Babylon, and some jealous officials wanted to get him in trouble. They watched him closely, looking for anything he did wrong. But the Bible says “they could find no charge or corruption, because he was trustworthy” (Daniel 6:4). Daniel was the same all the way through.
Proverbs says a person with integrity “walks securely.” They don’t have to worry about getting caught, because they have nothing to hide. That’s a free, peaceful way to live.
But the other kind of person “will be found out.” Hidden things have a way of coming to light. And even if no one else ever finds out, God sees everything. Nothing is hidden from Him. Remember Psalm 139? God knows when you sit down and when you get up. He’s there in the dark as much as in the light.
That’s not meant to scare you. God isn’t a spy trying to catch you. He’s a loving Father who wants you to be whole. And if you’ve done things in secret that you’re ashamed of, you can bring them into the light by telling God. He forgives completely.
Think about it: Is there any area of your life where you act differently when nobody is watching?
Try this: Today, when you’re alone, do the right thing, even though no one would know. Thank God that He sees you and is proud of you.
Dear God, You see me all the time, in the light and in the dark. Help me be the same person whether anyone is watching or not. Make me a person of integrity, whole and trustworthy all the way through. Forgive me for the things I’ve done in secret. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
