Day 25 — Just Ask

“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

— James 1:5 (BSB)

When Solomon became king of Israel, he was young and felt like he had no idea how to lead a whole nation. One night, God appeared to him in a dream and said something amazing: “Ask, and I will give it to you!”

Imagine that! Solomon could have asked for anything: a mountain of gold, a long life, victory over all his enemies. But Solomon asked for wisdom. He asked for an understanding heart so he could lead God’s people well and know the difference between right and wrong.

God was so pleased with Solomon’s request that He gave him wisdom, and riches and honor too. Solomon became famous as the wisest king who ever lived. (You can read about it in 1 Kings 3.)

What’s the difference between wisdom and knowledge? Knowledge is knowing facts. Wisdom is knowing what to do with them. Knowledge knows that a stove is hot. Wisdom doesn’t touch it! You can be really smart and still make foolish choices. Wisdom is seeing life the way God sees it, and making good choices because of it.

Every day you face decisions. Who should I sit with at lunch? How should I handle this argument? Should I watch this? What should I do when my friend asks me to lie for them? You need wisdom!

And here’s the great news: James says if you need wisdom, just ask. God doesn’t only give wisdom to kings or grown-ups or really smart people. He “gives generously to all.”

And look at this part: “without finding fault.” God won’t say, “Ugh, you again? Why don’t you know this already?” He’s never annoyed when you ask for help. He loves to give wisdom.

God usually gives wisdom through His Word, through wise people like parents and pastors, and through the quiet leading of His Spirit. So when you ask, keep your eyes and ears open.

Think about it: What’s a decision you’re facing right now where you need wisdom?

Try this: Before every decision today, big or small, pray a one-sentence prayer: “God, give me wisdom.”

Dear God, I need wisdom. Thank You for promising to give it generously when I ask. Help me see life the way You see it and make good choices. Give me wisdom for [name a decision]. Thank You that You never find fault when I ask. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
