Day 10 — Water into Wine
“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’”
— John 2:5 (BSB)
“Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”
— John 2:11 (BSB)
Have you ever been to a wedding? There’s music, dancing, lots of food and a happy celebration. In Jesus’ day, a wedding party could last a whole week! And it was the family’s job to make sure there was plenty for everyone.
Jesus, His mother Mary and His disciples were at a wedding in a village called Cana. But partway through, something embarrassing happened: the wine ran out. The family was about to be ashamed in front of the whole town.
Mary went to Jesus and told Him about the problem. Then she said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
Nearby stood six big stone jars, each one big enough to hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then Jesus said, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
When the man in charge tasted it, the water had become wine, and not just any wine. It was the best wine of the whole party! He was amazed.
John calls this “the first of His signs.” A sign points to something. This miracle pointed to who Jesus is. Only the Creator can change water into something new. And John says, “He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”
This story shows us that Jesus cares about everyday problems. Running out of wine wasn’t life or death. It was an embarrassing problem at a party. But Jesus cared, and He helped. You can bring your everyday problems to Jesus too, even the ones that seem small.
And don’t miss Mary’s words: “Do whatever He tells you.” That’s still the best advice anyone can give. The servants didn’t understand why Jesus wanted them to fill jars with water. But they obeyed, and they saw a miracle.
Think about it: What’s an everyday problem you could bring to Jesus that you haven’t prayed about yet?
Try this: Make Mary’s words your motto for today: “Do whatever He tells you.” When you have a choice to make, ask what Jesus would want, and do it.
Dear Jesus, thank You that You care about my everyday problems, not just the big ones. Help me bring everything to You. Like the servants, help me do whatever You tell me, even when I don’t understand why. In Your name, Amen.
