Day 5 — Pour It Out

“Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.”

— Psalm 62:8 (BSB)

Some days, you feel all the feelings at once. You wake up grumpy for no reason. Something small sets you off. You feel happy one minute and teary the next. You can’t even explain what’s wrong.

Those are moody days. Everyone has them, and as girls grow up, they often have more of them. (Next week, you’ll learn one reason why: your body is changing, and that can affect your feelings too.)

So what do you do with a moody day?

David gives a beautiful answer: “Pour out your hearts before Him.”

Picture pouring water out of a pitcher. You tip it all the way over, and everything inside comes out. David is saying: Don’t hold it in. Don’t pretend you’re fine. Pour it all out to God, every bit.

You can tell God, I don’t even know why I feel like this. You can tell Him, Everything is annoying me today. You can tell Him you feel sad, mad, confused or overwhelmed. God can handle all of it. He isn’t shocked by your feelings.

And then David adds: “God is our refuge.” A refuge is a safe place, like a shelter in a storm. When your feelings are swirling like a storm, God is a safe place to run to.

Here are some ways to pour out your heart:

  • Pray out loud somewhere private.
  • Write it in your journal. Some girls write letters to God.
  • Draw it if it’s hard to put into words.
  • Talk to someone you trust, like your mom, a grandmother or a friend who loves Jesus.

And on moody days, try to be gentle with yourself and with others. Tell your family, “I’m having a hard day,” instead of snapping at them. Get some rest. Go for a walk. Moody days don’t last forever.

Think about it: What do you usually do when you’re in a bad mood? What would it look like to “pour out your heart” to God instead?

Try this: Write God a letter in your journal about how you’re feeling today, and pour everything out.

Dear God, thank You that I can pour out my heart to You, even on days when I don’t understand my feelings. You are my refuge. When my feelings are stormy, help me run to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
