Day 1 — Brave Isn’t Fearless
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
— Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)
Lots of girls think being brave means never feeling scared. So when their stomach flips before a test, or their heart pounds before walking into a party, or they lie awake worrying about something, they think, I must not be brave.
But that’s not true! Everybody feels afraid sometimes, even the bravest people in the Bible. Being brave isn’t about being fearless. It’s about what you do when you’re afraid.
God spoke today’s words to His people at a time when they had a lot to be afraid of. Powerful enemies were all around them. And God didn’t say, “Don’t be silly, there’s nothing to be scared of.” He gave them reasons not to fear, reasons that are still true for you.
“I am with you.” You’re not facing it alone. Not the test, not the new school, not the doctor’s appointment, not the hard conversation. God is right there.
“I am your God.” He’s not just a god. He’s your God. You belong to Him, and He takes care of what belongs to Him.
“I will strengthen you.” When you feel weak or shaky, He gives you strength you don’t have on your own.
“I will surely help you.” Notice the word surely. He’s not going to maybe help you. He promises.
“I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” To uphold means to hold up. Picture a little girl walking on a wobbly balance beam while her dad holds her hand. She might wobble, but she won’t fall, because he’s holding her up.
So the next time you feel afraid, don’t tell yourself, I’m not brave. Instead, take God’s hand. Remember His promises. And take the next step, even while your heart is still pounding. That’s what bravery looks like.
Think about it: What’s something that often makes you feel afraid? Which of God’s promises in Isaiah 41:10 do you most need to remember?
Try this: Write Isaiah 41:10 on a card and keep it with you this week. Read it whenever fear shows up.
Dear God, thank You that I don’t have to be fearless to be brave. When I’m afraid, remind me that You are with me, You are my God, and You will strengthen me, help me and hold me up. Help me take Your hand and take the next step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
