Introduction: You Are a Daughter of the King
What words would you use to describe yourself?
Maybe you’d say funny, or shy, or sporty, or creative. Maybe you’d describe how you look: tall, short, curly hair, freckles. Maybe you’d name the things you’re good at, or the things you wish you were better at.
Now here’s a bigger question: what words does God use to describe you?
This book is about His answer. And His answer starts with this:
“And: ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’”
— 2 Corinthians 6:18 (BSB)
If you belong to Jesus, you are a daughter of the King. Not a princess in a fairy tale, but a real daughter of the real King of everything. He made you. He loves you. He knows your name. And He has a purpose for your life.
Being a girl today isn’t always easy. There’s a lot of pressure to look a certain way, act a certain way and have the right friends, the right clothes and the right everything. It’s easy to compare yourself to other girls and feel like you don’t measure up. Friendships can be wonderful, and they can also be full of drama. And it’s easy to forget who you really are.
That’s why we’re going to spend 30 days remembering.
What’s in this book
- Week 1 — Whose I Am. What God says about you.
- Week 2 — The Comparison Trap. How to stop measuring yourself against other girls.
- Week 3 — Friends and Words. Being a true friend, and handling drama God’s way.
- Week 4 — Brave Girls of the Bible. Miriam, Deborah, Abigail, Rahab, a servant girl and Mary.
- Week 5 — A Heart for God. Hannah, Mary and Martha, Lydia, and what makes a woman of God beautiful.
At the end of each week, you’ll also meet a real woman from history who trusted God in amazing ways. You can read their whole stories in the Brave for God books.
How each day works
Every day takes about five to ten minutes and has five parts:
- The verse. A short passage from the Bible. Read it slowly.
- The teaching. What the verse means for a girl like you.
- Think about it. A question to think about, or talk about with your mom, a friend or a leader.
- Try this. One small thing to do today.
- The prayer. A prayer to pray. Add your own words too!
Tips
- Grab a journal. Write down your answers, your prayers and anything God shows you.
- Read with someone. A mom, grandma, aunt, older sister or friend would be a great reading buddy.
- Be honest. God already knows how you feel. You can tell Him anything.
- Missed a day? Just keep going. He isn’t keeping score.
Let’s find out what the King says about His daughters.
For parents, grandparents and leaders
Daughters of the King is an Ochorus devotional series for girls aged 9 to 12, written alongside our co-ed series Rooted. Book 1 focuses on identity: worth that comes from God rather than appearance, comparison or popularity. It also looks at friendship and at women of the Bible who trusted Him with courage. It aims to build character and faith, and it doesn’t address adult roles. Scripture is quoted from the Berean Standard Bible. Each week ends with a short true story from our Brave for God series. The “Think about it” questions make good conversation starters, and many girls will enjoy reading this book with a mother, grandmother or mentor.
